Supply of an integrated facility to retrieve and pretreat radioactive bituminised drums from their shallow burial deposit in area 40 of JRC-Ispra
The bituminised drums represent the main historical waste stream, in terms of volume, produced and stored at the Ispra site. The drums contain low-level conditioned waste that originated from routine nuclear activities conducted on the Ispra site. There are more than 6 000 drums stacked 3-high in 3 50 m long trenches (A, B and C) completed and backfilled with earth during the period 1966 to 1988. The retrieval of the bituminised drums shall be executed within a facility, the scope of the present procedure, built with the following objectives:
a. to protect, as a minimum, the working area from reference environmental conditions (wind, snow, rain, etc.);
b. to provide dynamic confinement of the working area;
c. to pretreat the drums;
d. management and initial characterisation of excavated soil.
